What is web-hosting?

Your website is a collection of files no one can access, until they’re put on a server. A Website Hosting Provider allows a safe place to store your files so that the world can access your website when they type www.yourcompany.com into a browser.

What most people don’t understand is why to pay a hosting company. Why not just put those files on your own computer and not pay anyone?

You could…but if your website is important to your business in any way, you want to pay a hosting company.

They will provided dedicated servers or hard drive where your site lives. They will put your files on at least 2 servers so there is ‘redundancy’ in case of a power failure. These servers are used for no other purpose than to host websites. So the speed on the computer is never slowed by being in use. And how often do you restart your computer or put it to sleep? Every time you do this, your website would be down and that is attached to your email!

Hosting a website does not need to cost much. For a standard, brochure type site, you’re looking at under $20/month.
